A pedestrian who died after a crash in Stratford has been named as 76-year-old James McCubbin.
The crash took place on The Grove, near Stratford Library, at around 4.40pm on July 4.
Mr McCubbin was rushed to the trauma centre at The Royal London Hospital where he died in theatre at 7.26pm the same day.
The Met Police said a woman was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and driving under the influence of drugs.
An inquest into Mr McCubbin’s death was opened at East London Coroner’s Court on Wednesday, August 20.
“The cause of death is clearly an unnatural cause of death and accordingly I have to open an inquest,” senior coroner Graeme Irvine said.
Mr McCubbin lived in Gift Lane, not far from the scene of the crash.
Mr Irvine said: “Trying to establish a next of kin has been rather difficult. It seems Mr McCubbin, in his retirement, had become estranged from his family but nonetheless I will make his family an interested person in proceedings.”
An interested person is a legal status entitling them to scrutinise evidence before the inquest and question any witnesses called to testify.
“If there is CCTV from outside the area concerned, it is a very busy street in the centre of Stratford which has a large number of commercial premises, I will need to see it,” Mr Irvine said.
A full inquest will take place at a later date.
