One of Britain’s most acclaimed singer/songwriters is returning to the London stage.

Former Newham resident Linda Lewis, whose career spans more than four decades, is making a comeback for one night only at the Jazz Café in Camden Town next month.

Known for hit singles such as It’s In His Kiss and Sideways Shuffle, which has more recently been covered by British soul singer Joss Stone, Linda promises to delight old and new fans with songs from her impressive repertoire.

The concert comes in light of Linda’s upcoming album, Hampstead Days, which she said was inspired by her time living with the likes of David Bowie in a commune in north London.

Linda’s memories of growing up in the East End were also influential on her career and life.

She said: “I started when I was very small, three years old. We would get on a bus and my mum would say ‘start singing’ and people would give me money. I am one of six and my mother, Lily, pushed us to do music.

“She ran a music pub in Barking Road, The Red House, and when she died they had a proper East End funeral for her. She wanted us to have the opportunities that we didn’t.”

Linda explained she has vivid memories of her childhood in Custom House.

She said: “I was born right near the docks and I remember hearing the boats, the sound of them and the colourful people that came off them.”

Linda will be reuniting with musicians she played with 40 years ago, and guests like 90s star Roachford and X Factor’s Ray Quinn will make an appearance.

Linda said: “I feel it’s going to be like a party. I’m a bit nervous but really looking forward to it.”

The performance starts at 7pm on Sunday, June 8 and tickets are £18.50 in advance. For booking, visit mamacolive.com/thejazzcafe
