The lights are down, but there’s a crackle of anticipation which develops into roars of excitement – even before the dancers have unleashed their artillery of moves.
This suspense never leaves Project Rebel, Boy Blue Entertainment’s latest demonstration of their hip hop finesse. Simulating warfare, the 20-odd khaki-clad group swells inwards and outwards as one in a wave of destruction. A fist fight between two performers is an assault on the senses, a fast-paced blend of choreography designed by co-founder Kenrick ‘H20’ Sandy and shaped by the cast themselves.
In Sunday’s penultimate performance at Sadler’s Well’s international hip hop festival, Breakin’ Convention, the futility of war is underscored by the rage of the music. Fellow group founder Michael ‘Mikey J’ Asante creates a bass-exploding accompaniment which perfectly complements the attacking, possessed moves of the Maryland-based troupe.
The deafening reaction at the end of the piece shows the impact will resonate far longer than the electrifying ten minutes on stage.
Breakin’ Convention tours across the UK until June 3. Go to breakinconvention.com to book tickets.
