Cupcakes, scones and an array of finger sandwiches served in a porthole make for a nautical but nice afternoon tea.

As you’d expect from Sunborn London’s lavish location in Royal Docks, this tea is incredibly luxurious.

There’s two options – a traditional tea or the fitting under the sea afternoon version which swaps the more commonplace sandwich choices for more fishy varities, including the exquisite lobster thermidor on roasted onion bread.

These are served up alongside a selection of sea-themed cupcakes, a chocolate brownie and a choux pastry horn with Grand Marnier crème patisserie – and two moreish mini rich butter fruit scones.

There’s also a choice of organic teas and coffees – I went for a refreshing Citrus Mint while my guest picked an Americano – and the chance to upgrade to a glass of champagne.

Even the gloomy British weather couldn’t take the shine out of the incredible waterside view which shows off the O2, Canary Wharf and beyond.

It’s the perfect date with a difference or a mouthwatering treat.

The traditional afternoon tea costs £26pp or £36pp with a glass of Laurent-Perrier Brut. The afternoon tea under the sea costs £32pp or £42pp with a glass of Laurent-Perrier Brut. Visit sunbornhotels.com/london to book.
