David Bailey opened a series of talks held to celebrate the imminent arrival of the Olympics in Newham

The iconic photographer, who shot to fame in the 1960s, took part in a question and answer session with Tim Marlow at a packed Theatre Royal Stratford East.

He shared his experiences growing up in east London and revealed memorable moments from his career.

An exhibition featuring some of his best work from the 60s, 80s and recent times has just opened at Compressor House in Silvertown.

The event was part of the Ideas Olympiad, a series of free lectures organised by Newham Council.

Upcoming speakers include Professor Christopher Stringer, from the Natural History Museum. A panel debate, Generation 2012: The Challenges Ahead.
