A mother-of-five is hoping to capture some of the Olympic spirit in Plaistow next month by organising a family fun day.

Winsome Gillin, a member of the Seventh Day Adventist church, is one of four people determined to make the most of the Games when it arrives in under four weeks.

The ‘‘Let’s get the party started’’ event, featuring live music and dance, will take place in Plaistow Park, in Balaam Street from 11am on July 15, just a week before the opening ceremony. Visitors can also take part in Zumba, sports and activities, and face-painting.

Mrs Gillin said: “We want to create a mini-Olympics event for families to come down and get involved and have a good time.

“There will be live music, and we are trying to get some local groups from every nationality to perform.”

Organisers secured a time-limited premises licence from Newham Council’s sub-licensing committee. They will have to use a noise-limitation device.

Mrs Gillin, a childminder, added: “The people working with me are teachers, so we think this will appeal to young people and families. “Everyone wants to get involved in the Olympics but they can’t get tickets. When I mentioned it to people, they said yes that’s a good idea.

“I haven’t got a ticket, but my son got one for the basketball from his college [NewVIc] so there’s hope for all of us.”
