Boys and girls book trips to Crystal Palace
Newham’s boys and girls booked their place at the London Youth Games basketball finals with impressive displays at qualifying.
The girls won their quarter-final in dramatic style, scoring a three-point shot in the last few seconds to secure a 24-21 win over Hounslow, to set up a semi-final meeting with Hackney at Crystal Palace next month.
Manager Caroline Charles said: “It feels so good. This year it has been hard because a lot of our players have gone to the United States.
“We arrived with basically an under-14 team and one of our players has come back from a back injury but they’ve done so well.”
Newham eased past Lewisham (41-11) and Ealing (38-6) in their group, as well as beating Croydon (15-6) and Camden (22-4) to finish with maximum points before their clash with Hounslow.
The boys, meanwhile, were made to work hard for their group wins against Hounslow (16-14), Islington (21-17) and Wandsworth (25-16), before seeing off east London rivals Tower Hamlets (27-12) in the quarter-finals to set up a meeting with favourites Southwark at Crystal Palace.
