Newham's senior fencing squad won bronze at the London Youth Games finals

Newham’s borough fencing team made it on to the podium once again at the London Youth Games finals at Redbridge Sports Centre.

The senior squad, comrised of Newham Swords fencers Emilija Lukaite, Keir Adeleke, Abubakar Bah and Teagan Williams-Stewart, beat Enfield and City of London in their group, then knocked out Enfield in the quarter-finals.

But they were beaten by eventual champions Camden in the semi-finals and had to settle for bronze, along with Kensington & Chelsea.

Nonetheless, Newham still holds the record of eight overall titles in the fencing event and manager Linda Strachan said: “I am so proud of this achievement, given that our team included there 14-year-olds who had to fence against teams with 17 year olds.

“They were the youngest senior team in the competition, who remained undefeated throughout the day before losing to the eventual winners.”
