A round-up of the action from the NEC Wheelchair Tennis Masters

Jordanne Whiley led the British charge at NEC Wheelchair Tennis Masters at Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre on Wednesday.

Whiley opened her account at the NEC Wheelchair Tennis Masters on Wednesday with a 6-4 6-2 opening round robin win over fellow Briton Lucy Shuker.

“I was a bit nervous to start with but it was good to get the first win in the pool,” said Whiley. “Lucy played a good match today and used different tactics from the previous times we had played and that threw me for a bit.

“Once I settled into the game my power and shots combined with a fast surface gave me the confidence to play my tennis.

“It’s great to play here in London. This event is attracting a lot of attention. There are loads of schools here; there are plenty of people here watching and it’s great that wheelchair tennis is getting that recognition.”

Scotland’s Gordon Reid notched up comfortable 6-2 6-4 win over experienced Frenchman Stephane Houdet in his opening round robin match on Wednesday.

“I’m very pleased with the win, the surface here in London is one of the fastest on the circuit and I felt comfortable with my tactics playing Stefan,” said Reid.

British quad player Andy Lapthorne was left disappointed when he lost a gruelling 1-6 7-6(1) 7-5 to David Wagner in one of the day’s longest matches.

“It was a tough and long match but I must learn to take my chances,” said Lapthorne. “David is the best in the world and his experience and concentration showed and mine let me down at crucial stages.”

All three British players will be in action again on Thursday.
