Wapping men’s seconds secured promotion to the East League Premier with impressive back-to-back wins at the weekend.

Third-placed Shefford & Sandy visited Lee Valley on Saturday and Wapping raced into an early lead as Jonny Madill won a short corner and Adam Haines pounced to score when Dom Oliver’s drag flick was saved on the line.

A strong run by James Fanger was cut short by a visiting defender, who was sent to the sin bin as a result, and the hosts needed good defensive work from Charley Wright and Dudley Spiers to deny Shefford a reply.

James Bowler made some impressive saves too and Wapping doubled their lead before half-time as Oliver teed up Alain Traill to score.

Dylan Holman and Sam Philpott impressed after the restart, but Shefford converted on a breakaway to halve the deficit 20 minutes from time.

Ollie Davies fired home from a short corner to restore the two-goal cushion, before a superb team move involving Haines, Oliver, Spiers, Philpott and Bobby Watson set up Madill in the D, before he teed up Matt Hyden to score from a narrow angle.

The visitors claimed their second goal with a reverse-stick finish, but Oliver won and then converted a penalty flick to make it 5-2 and Jack Beard combined with Jason Black to set up Watson for the sixth and final goal.

Wapping were back in action the following day as Bishop’s Stortford visited and took the lead when Olly Cooper, Fanger, Madill and Edward Fry combined for Oliver to deflect home.

Spiers converted a clever short corner routine to make it 2-0 at half time, with Oliver deflecting in his second goal of the game from another set-piece in the second half.

Michael Bolle won another corner, with Traill converting, and player of the match Oliver wrapped up a 5-0 win when completing his hat-trick from Black’s excellent pass to the far post.

Bowler denied Stortford a late reply, before Wapping began to celebrate a second promotion in three seasons under coach Steve Turner and captain Wright.

They can clinch the title against Blueharts this weekend, before visiting Harleston on March 25.
