Wapping’s men produced a great attacking display to ease past East Premier A basement boys Spalding and move level on points with leaders St Albans on Saturday.
The home side dominated possession and chances in the first half, but Spalding held firm until Adam Fallis broke the deadlock late on.
Spalding levelled from a short corner after the restart, but Wapping regained the upper hand through Ben Bull’s brace.
Wapping controlled the rest of the match, as Ben Andrews, Max Bowerman and David McLean pulled the strings in midfield and Will Cairns (2), Nat Crawley, Grant Aidoo-Nash and Ollie Salveson all found the net to make it 8-1.
The visitors grabbed a consolation from the last play of the game but Wapping were convincing winners ahead of their February 3 clash with St Albans at Lee Valley.
Wapping’s women were also celebrating after beating Cambridge University 4-2 in their East Premier encounter.
After a patient start, they upped the tempo and took the lead with a nice finish from Kate O’Sullivan.
Jenni Allen doubled the lead in the second half, following a scramble in the D, but the students hit back on an overlap.
More patient approach play saw Ciara Murphy pick out Becky Hart on the left with a great pass and she in turn found O’Sullivan to enter the D and set up Allen to make it 3-1.
Cambridge closed the gap to one again from the penalty spot, but Wapping had the last word thanks to Lucy Todd.
The thirds beat Thurrock 5-1 as Barbara Lo Giudice, Charlotte Holt, Holly Marven, Emma Skinner and Issy Meere netted, while Heather Shand and Hattie Gaunt struck for the fourths in a 2-1 win over Chelmsford thirds.
Emma Macreedy hit a hat-trick as Bee Hughes and Marieke van Kleef notched doubles in the sixth team’s 7-0 win over Thurrock thirds, with Lo Giudice and Rachel Hasslehoff scoring two goals each as the over-35s beat Crostyx by a 4-0 margin.
The men’s seconds romped to a 10-2 win over Waltham Forest, as Bobby Watson scored four times and Alain Trail and Dom Oliver added hat-tricks.
And Tom Finill’s treble saw the sixth team to a 3-1 win over East London fifths in their derby meeting.
