Wapping Hockey Club are launching ‘L’Ump Month’ in October to raise money for Breast Cancer Care as part of the charity’s Big Pink Campaign.

All club umpires will be encouraged to wear pink when officiating and donate some of all of their expenses.

And Wapping will also host social events to raise more money, culminating in a Halloween fancy dress on October 27.

Chair Matt Patterson said: “Wapping is proud to be taking part in Breast Cancer Care’s Big Pink. We’ve already had a great response from our umpires and members and hope other clubs join us in raising money for this worthy cause.”

Umpire liaison officer James Holmes added: “In February four of us were umpiring and came up with the idea to wear pink shirts in solidarity with those affected by breast cancer.

“The idea proved popular with other umpires and grew to become a month-long event.”
