Birch and Rai to represent country at Junior European Championships

Newham Swords pair Jai Birch and Rajan Rai are set to go continental in their bid for glory after being selected in the Great Britain team for the Junior European Championships in March.

Fresh from some outstanding results in the World Cup this season, the duo have been selected to represent their country in Slovenia later this year.

British number one Birch and national under-20 champion Rai will be accompanied at the event by Swords head coach Pierre Harper, who says call-up is a reward for their hard work.

“Their selection is thoroughly deserved,” said Harper, who himself is a former Olympian.

Birch and Rai are not the only Swords members who will be on international duty this year after Emilija Lukaite was selected for the England under-15 team that will compete in Paris in February and Poland in March.

“I am so proud of Emilija’s selection”, said club manager Linda Strachan. “It is a fantastic achievement to be selected for both events.”
