Stratford Judo club have produced three veteran gold medallists at recent competitions in the UK, writes Jack Bacon.

Undefeated veteran Howard Melville made a winning return this year at the international Grand Masters event in Cardiff.

Prior to his medal victory in the over-35 category Melville had to earn his place at the Commonwealth Judo Championships event held at the Millenium Centre by winning a Masters tournament last December.

The Grand Masters event provided an international stage for the Stratford combatant with over 27 countries entering the competition.

Following qualification, Melville stretched his winning run after conquering opponents in all his fights to become the under-81kg class commonwealth gold medallist.

The east London club recently welcomed back two new gold medallists male students, Genrik Pupkevic and Dob Cibiliovas from victories in Suffolk.

The pair claimed individual successes at the Ipswich Masters Open Championships.

While both men competed in pools of four, they each won their own weight category as Pupkevic fought in the under-81kg class and Cibiliovas won the under-90kg group.
