Trio make it on to podium in Norfolk
Stratford Judo Club won three medals at the English Open (pre-cadet) in Thetford, Norfolk recently.
The under-14 competition included nationally-ranked players and Stratford’s Omar Lecointe, 13, won bronze in the under-66kg event with two wins from four fights.
One of Lecointe’s wins was won by Ippon, after using a favourite Tai-toshi throw, and the yellow belt competitors also beat a brown belt rival on his way to the podium, saying: “I enjoyed the competition. I look forward to more in the future.”
Clubmate Lena James, 13, won silver in the over-63kg category after winning three fights out of five.
James won two with throwing techniques and one thanks to a hold-down and coach Mendez Azvendo said: “Lena could have won a gold but she was suffering from a shoulder and knee injury.”
Stratford’s Mohammed Boudemagh, 13, also won silver in his over-66kg category after winning three fights out of four, two by Ippon and one when his opponent suffered a disqualification.
Mendez added: “I was pleased they got medals and that two Stratford Judoists got to the finals. I am particular pleased with Omar who beat a brown belt. I hope for even better results in future competitions.”
