Year 11 squad make it four in a row
St Bonaventure’s year 11 boys booked a place in the national basketball finals for the fourth year in a row with a convincing 100-56 win over Liverpool’s Blue Coat School.
The Merseysiders travelled down to Newham for a repeat of last year’s semi-final, but St Bons started brightly and worked well in transition, with Hadrian Basilio and Laja Ogidan partnering up well to give them the advantage.
Captain Richmond Ariyo continued the early pressure, assisted by Franklin Agu, as Blue Coat looked out of sorts, to establish a first-quarter lead.
But the visitors fought back in the second quarter to get themselves back on level terms with a succession of three-point shots, before Dalton Bally and Marka Sy helped St Bons move two points ahead at half time.
Coach Stephen Onireti changed tactics for the third quarter, placing his trust in the younger players to find the intensity of the first quarter.
Year 10 pupils Teon Boente-Edwards and Titus Warari, with year nine Christian Adun, gave St Bons a much-needed boost at both ends of the court as the home side moved 20 points clear.
The onslaught continued on the defensive end which led to fast breaks for St Bons as their lead continued to grow and they eventually reached three figures in a dominant display.
