Newham table tennis trials prove a success

Three pupils from Canning Town’s Rokeby School have earned places on the Newham table tennis squad for the London Youth Games.

A total of 30 boys from across the borough attended trials, with Rokeby putting nine students forward.

And after competing in several drills and a round of knockout matches, Rokeby’s Hamza Sheikey, Hamza Mohammed and Erik Michailov were picked out by the selectors.

Coach Ash Willetts said: “It’s a massive achievement for the boys considering they have only been playing for six months.

“They performed great in the trial and I’m delighted for them to make the team. From the boys’ point of view it’s fantastic they can see some results from all the hard work they are putting in.”

The London Youth Games is Europe’s largest annual youth sports event and the table tennis finals will be held at Redbridge Sports Centre on June 13-14.
