Rugby squad win first-ever match
Forest Gate Community School celebrated victory over Chobham Academy in their first-ever rugby match.
The mixed year eight and nine team have only been training since September, but they scored 13 tries in total on their way to a 65-25 victory.
Aringas Siupneys was named man of the match after scoring a hat-trick of tries, linking up well with captain Gabriel Weeden and vice-captain Harvey Saunders.
Siupneys had never played rugby before the start of term, btu his commitment to training has helped him make exceptional progress.
Brandon Goodison also scored a hat-trick, while Weeden and Afzal Saiyed each touched down twice.
Henry Houghton, Fahim Nuha and Mason Palmer also went over to complete the tally for Forest Gate, who face East London Science School in their next match.
Head of PE Rob Clark said: “I am very proud of the Forest Gate Rugby team. They played exceptionally well and exceeded all of our expectations.
“Rugby is a sport enjoyed by many students during their PE lessons and I am very happy that we have been able to take this to a competitive level. “As a school, we aim to install British values in all of our students and rugby has proven to be an excellent medium to achieve this.
“The recent Rugby World Cup helped create a buzz around the sport and after taking students to see New Zealand v Namibia in October, the next step was to get the team playing competitively themselves.
“This has proven very successful following the recent result against Chobham Academy. I would like to say a special thank you to Wanstead Rugby Club for sharing their kit and linking with us to introduce and develop our students in Rugby. Bring on the next game!”
Tom Leather added: ““I am extremely pleased with the result and performance from all students. Since we started training two months ago, I have seen the boys make excellent progress due to their passion and determination.
“Captain Gabriel Weeden has demonstrated fantastic leadership qualities and has been an excellent role model for other team members who are new to the sport.
“Other stand out performers were Harry Rodriguez and Aringas Siupenys, whose barnstorming runs contributed to numerous tries. We are all very excited for the next match and more success.”
Captain Weeden said: “Demolishing is one way to describe our outstanding thrashing of Chobham Academy! The game was split into four quarters and in the first we built up a strong lead, but in the second Chobham opened a few doors with no tries from Forest Gate.
“After this small hiccup, Forest Gate were back in charge and got many more points on the board. It was a well-earned victory after the dedication put in by both students and staff.
“Everyone put in an unforgettable shift, smashing through the middle were Harry Rodriquez and Aringas Siupneys. Henry Houghton saved the team on many occasions with several try-saving tackles. Also, there was great input by the vice-captain Harvey Saunders, who displayed excellent communication skills throughout the game.
“A special mention to Mr Leather who dedicates his time to put us through our paces in training and to all the staff that have supported us. We will hopefully have more games before Christmas and we will aim to continue our outstanding progress in rugby.”
