Local schoolchildren to greet Rugby World Cup Trophy tour

Newham schoolchildren will welcome rugby’s Webb Ellis Cup to the borough as part of the Rugby World Cup Trophy tour on Sunday.

Pupils from Gallions, St Luke’s and Keir Hardie Primary schools and West Ham United’s Community Sports Trust will be joined by England’s most-capped player Jason Leonard and sporting soprana Laura Wright as the iconic piece of silverware comes to the capital.

The prestigious Trophy will arrive in the Royal Docks on the Emirates Air Line cable car accompanied by Wright, England Rugby’s official anthem singer, and Leonard, who was capped 114 times for his country.

Wright will perform ‘Jerusalem’ on the dockside as the Cup is greeted by Newham’s Deputy Mayor Cllr Lester Hudson and local schoolchildren.

The Webb Ellis Cup began a 100-day tour in June and will visit Newham on September 6-7 before arriving at Twickenham, the home of English Rugby, on September 18 ahead of the first match of the tournament.

From Royal Victoria Dock, the Cup will move to Memorial Park, West Ham where East London Rugby Football Club are hosting a free community event from 12pm with the chance for people to snap a photo between 3pm and 6pm. #

The event offers a packed programme including a veterans’ tournament, women’s matches and a children’s tournament.

There will be a bar and barbecue and entertainment performed by ska, reggae and two-tone band Skamite.

On Monday, September 7 the Trophy will be greeted by schoolchildren at West Ham United’s Learning Zone in the Boleyn Ground, Upton Park.

It will also visit the Army Reserve Centre in West Ham and the former Olympic Stadium where five matches are taking place during Rugby World Cup 2015.

Deputy Mayor Cllr Lester Hudson said: “We are very proud that Newham is a Host City of Rugby World Cup 2015. Our residents will be the first in London to welcome the Webb Ellis Cup when it arrives in London.

“Hosting Rugby World Cup 2015 and other world renowned events represents yet another community benefit from our part ownership of the former Olympic Stadium.

“We have already shown during the 2012 Games that we know how to create a festival atmosphere and we look forward once again to welcoming the world to Newham.”

Rugby World Cup fixtures to be played at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park include:

• France v Romania – Wednesday September 23 (8pm)

• New Zealand v Namibia – Thursday September 24 (8pm)

• Ireland v Italy – Sunday October 4 (4.45pm)

• South Africa v USA – Wednesday October 7 (4.45pm)

• Bronze Final – Friday October 30 (8pm)
