Young fencer lands National Foil title

Newham Swords added to its ever-increasing medal haul when Rajan Rai claimed the National Under-20 Foil title.

Rai, ranked GB number one at under-20 level, remained unbeaten throughout the day and had to overcome some tough opposition along the way.

He beat his Swords team-mate and GB number two Jai Birch in the quarter-finals, before defeating the National under-17 champion Dominic Aldameada in the last four.

Rai then saw off GB number three Alex Lloyd in the final to be crowned champion.

Six Newham Swords fencers made it to the last 16, but unfortunately knocked each other out of the tournament due to their seedings after the first round.

Manager Linda Strachan said: “This has been a superb season for Raj, after winning gold at the UK School Games, gold at the Gateshead under-20 tournament and now gold at the GB under-20 Championships.

“He thoroughly deserves his GB under-20 number one spot.”

Head coach Pierre Harper added: “We are so proud of what Raj has acheived this season.

“He has taken a year off after his studies and dedicated his time to training. His results are thoroughly deserved.”
