Newham Swords have golden experience at qualifiers

Fencing club take eight medals as members qualify for both nationals and Commonwealths
Newham Swords fencing club took eight medals from the Eastern Region qualifier, including six golds.
In the under-18 boys category, Kamal Minott finished on the top step of the podium while Ciaran Archer won a bronze.
In the under-16s division for boys Great Britain international James Page emerged triumphant as did Benjamin Udrzal in the under-15s and Jacob Haynes in the under-12s.
In the girls competiton, Rachel Shaw won the gold in the under-16s division as Emily Lukaite and Tegan Williams-Stewart finished first and third respectively in the under-14s division.
All Newham fencers taking part in the competition have were also able to secure their place at the British Youth Championships in Sheffield in May.
Head coach Pierre Harper was thrilled with the club’s haul at the qualifiers.
“To take a total of six golds and two bronzes in one weekend is an outstanding result for our club. We now look forward to working with them all at the BYC Finals,” said Harper.
Elsewhere the Swords had five members qualify for the Cadet and Junior Commonwealth Games which are due to take place in Cape Town at the beginning of July.
Shaw, Minott and Archer all qualified for the tournament along with Alice Campbell and Katrina Feklistova which filled club manager Linda Strachan with joy.
“We are very proud of the fact that the Club has five fencers attending these Championships,” said Strachan.
