Mixed start to the new bowls season for Aldersbrook

It proved to be a mixed start to the new bowls season for Aldersbrook as they were beaten by Wanstead in their opening Foresters League clash, but bounced back with victory over Barking in the Ilford & District League.

The Foresters League is played on a two home and two away rink basis and it was over at Overton Drive where Aldersbrook found the most problems.

Eddie Townsend’s rink of John Plunkett and Brian Gediking were beaten 21-10 by John Pluck and his boys, and when John Lapping, John Williams and skip Joe Stagg were beaten 23-13 by Brian Kelly’s rink, it was always going to be an uphill struggle.

However, Aldersbrook did fare better on home turf.

Dave Brackett’s rink of Ian Robertson and Chris Newman won 21-16, but when Gordon Scrivener, Alan Stock and skip Jerry Quy went down 16-12 the overall score was 76-56 to Wanstead, who collected 11 of the 15 match points on offer.

It was a much better story in the home game against Barking on Saturday as Stagg’s rink of Lapping and Stock beat Bob Jarrold’s men by a whopping 36-11 margin.

That was backed up by an impressive 22-4 victory for Plunkett, Gediking and skip Townsend and, although Steve Plastow’s rink of Ian Robertson and Chris Newman went down 26-11 to Alf Groves’ boys, the rest had done enough to seal a 69-41 victory and eight points to Barking’s two.
