Mayte Perez was the star as London GD women's seconds went through to the second round of the cup.
The Spaniard scored 11 goals as her team pipped Coventry 32-30 away on Sunday in a close EHA League Cup game.
By half time, GD had opened up a 21-15 lead but it was a closer affair in the second half.
Coventry were determined to close the gap and it took a determined effort from the visitors defence to preserve the advantage.
There was also seven goals for Sarah Krauter and three apiece for captain Laurie Chan-Lam and Marie Aubourg.
Chan-Lam said afterwards: “It felt wonderful to win the game and it’s a great start for us in the League Cup.
“We still need a bit more speed and a stronger attack. We know what we want to improve and we are going to work hard to make sure we are ready for our next match.”
The men’s firsts put in a solid performance to win their opening EHA National Cup game of the season.
They defeated London rivals Olympia 25-21, with Philip Altong top scoring with seven goals.
A solid performance from goalkeeper Theo Bougouin helped them lead 13-6 at the interval, but in the second half GD couldn’t hold on to their considerable advantage.
Olympia worked hard and managed to launch several counter attacks following a more aggressive defence, but GD kept their focus to win by four points.
It was a dissapointing weekend for GD women’s firsts as they lost 30-23 to Thames in the National League.
It was Thames who powered ahead in the first half and they were ruthless in attack and solid in defence.
The visitors led 17-9 at half time, but despite six goals from Sharon Stevelink and four strikes from Stephanie Wesselink, Thames held on for the victory.
