Maldon mauled by East London hockey ladies

PUBLISHED: 12:09 08 March 2012

East London’s ladies took another step towards claiming the Essex Premier Division title on Saturday with a business-like 4-1 victory over Maldon and Little Baddow at Mile End.

This gives them an eight point lead over second placed Old De Ferrians with only four games remaining in the season.

The scoreline didn’t do justice to the dominance that East London displayed throughout the game, creating chances at will and rarely being put under any real pressure.

Two goals apiece from Felicity Patterson and Baitong Chantaruck sealed the points with the visitors only managing a scrambled consolation in reply.

Tightly contested

Meanwhile, the men bagged their first point in 11 games in a tightly-contested game away at Saffron Walden.

Solid defending from East London and some excellent saves from the Saffron Walden keeper maintained the blank scoresheet until deep into the second half.

A run and lay off from right back James Cook put him in the perfect position to redirect a shot from Adam Willoughby into the bottom corner.

The home side suddenly came alive after the goal and began pushing for an equaliser, winning a series of penalty corners that where repelled by some spirited East London defending.

With less than two minutes remaining, Saffron Walden won another short corner and this time snatched the draw with a strike through the crowded D into the bottom right-hand corner of the goal.
