Newham Flames Handball Club coach Konrad Markwardt has high hopes for the future after his team’s solid start to their first season in the SportHouse London Handball League.
Markwardt’s team, who play at the SportHouse venue at Mayesbrook Park, made a dream debut when they beat UCL 24-22 in their first competitive game two weeks ago.
They followed up with a narrow 29-28 defeat to Imperial on Saturday and their Polish coach is confident of a good season.
“The team was created in 2006 which was a junior team of players from schools in Newham,” Markwardt said.
“I came along last year and we have now joined the SportHouse Handball League. There is seven teams in our division and we play 12 games in total. We have won one and lost one.
“The main core of our team is from the junior players who have progressed from the old teams. They are all homegrown players and the average age is less than 22-years-old.
“They are from local schools in East London and we are trying to get more players. We are trying to boost our numbers. The goal is to have a very good junior division at the club and a full team of homegrown players.”
