Kings Cross Steelers will look to bounce back to winning ways when they tackle a historic away fixture against Braintree, writes Jacob Ranson.

The Steelers, who were founded as the first ever gay inclusive rugby union club in 1995, always take special pride in this upcoming fixture as their opponents were the first side they beat after struggling to get fixtures for a long time.

The club founder, local MP’s and former players will be coming down to the match to reminisce the fixture.

They go into it on the back of a 26-17 defeat at home to Maldon last weekend though and will be determined to get a win.

The second team will also travel away to Woodford’s second string side as they look to continue their rich vein of form after sealing a comfortable 50-0 victory against Bancroft.

Coach Scott Marshal said: “The first few minutes were woeful for the visiting team, seemingly asleep at kick-off the larger Bancroft Pack was able to win the ball back and build pressure just outside the KXS 22 metre line for a sustained period.

“Gradually territory and pressure built as KXS worked back onto the front foot.”

KXS were rewarded by a strong individual try to Jonah Weisz who chipped twice and chased the ball down to score a 60 metre try.

The Steelers scored twice more before the half time break with charging breaks to prop Richard Surmon and Ben Brookes respectively to make it 19-0.

The second half saw the Steelers continue to apply pressure but over-eagerness to score without leveraging phase play saw a number of scoring opportunities not executed.

Eventually the building pressure led to success with tries to Craig Terron, Chris Martin, and Ian Bowden all breaking the line.

Quentin Louy touched down his first for the club, only to back it up a few moments later with a second try.

The fourth team travel away to Loughton this weekend on the back of a heavy 62-12 defeat to Bexley seconds.

Coach Ben Pugh said: “The Steelers showed some promising signs early on, with the set-piece working much better, but paid heavily for a series of missed tackles which enabled Bexley to build a healthy lead.”
