England to return to Olympic Park action

Tickets are now on sale for the Hockey World League Semi-Final in London next year, when the world’s best players will compete in the capital.

England’s men will take on their rivals at the Lee Valley Hockey & Tennis Centre in Stratford from June 15-27, with a total of 33 matches being played as teams battle it out for World Cup qualification in the year’s biggest hockey event in this country.

Sally Munday, chief executive of England Hockey, said: “We are honoured to have been asked by the International Hockey Federation to host the men’s Hockey World League Semi-Final in 2017, and I am sure it will be another landmark event in London.

“Having very successfully hosted the women’s EuroHockey Championships in 2015 and both men’s and women’s Hockey Champions Trophies in 2016, we will not rest on our laurels and plans are already well underway to make this event bigger and better.”

International Hockey Federation chief executive Kelly Fairweather added: “The Hockey World League Semi-Finals provide some of the most dramatic and exciting matches within hockey.

“With Hockey World Cup qualification on the line, it will be all to play for. With affordable tickets and even more fun and exciting entertainment and activities planned for 2017, don’t miss out on what will be one of the best international hockey events of the year.”

Lee Valley Regional Park Authority chief executive Shaun Dawson continued: “This is the fourth major hockey championships we’ll be hosting at Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre since opening in 2014, further cementing this stellar centre as Hockey’s major events venue, while also providing outstanding schools, club and community programmes.”

Iain Edmondson, head of major events at London & Partners, added: “This is a major sports event which will attract hockey fans from across the country who will come to see some of the world’s best players competing in London.

“We’re delighted to be hosting the men’s Hockey World League in 2017 and there’s never been a better time to experience world-class sporting events. This is another high calibre event for the city which we hope will attract a number of visitors to the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.”

A statement from UK Sport said: “Hockey World League London 2017 forms part of UK Sport’s ambitious Gold Event Series, which is investing £50million to bring over 100 of the world’s most prestigious sporting events to the UK and generate an estimated £500million of economic impact to the host cities and regions.”

England are already confirmed to compete and opposition teams will be confirmed following the completion of the hockey tournament at the Rio Olympics.
