New winger sets sights after penning one-year deal

Johnny Gorman believes Leyton Orient can chase a League One play-off spot after signing a one-year contract with the club.

The Northern Irish winger, who has nine full caps, impressed O’s boss Russell Slade during a week’s trial that saw him play in two games and score against an Arsenal XI on Tuesday.

And the former Wolves player hopes to help his new club challenge at the top end of the table once the season kicks off against Carlisle on Saturday.

Gorman, 20, said: “I know at Orient were unlucky to miss out on the play-offs last season, so hopefully we can go one better this time.

“My first aim, though, is just to try and be involved in the squad this weekend and it’s then a case of taking every game as it comes.”

After being released from his contract at Wolves, for whom he made just one first-team outing, Gorman admits to being relieved at landing a contract before the start of the season.

He said: “Obviously I’m pleased. It’s just good to get signed by a League One club.

“After not knowing where I was going to be during pre-season, it’s good to be settled somewhere and to start my career again here.

“I came down Saturday morning, played against QPR [in a behind-closed-doors game] and Arsenal and it’s all happened quite quickly.

“When you come in on trial the first thing you want to do is try and get signed – and so I’m really pleased to be here.”
