Luke With’s strike eight minutes from time saw Tower Hamlets edge past a resurgent London APSA side.

Zakir Hussain’s APSA had gone into the game off the back of two fine 3-1 wins over Takeley and Great Wakering Rovers on Saturday and Thursday respectively, but a much-changed side with several debutants eventually succumbed.

Defender Bilal Bapu did make a welcome return to first team action for the first time in three seasons after a horrific leg break.

And although both side’s passion and hunger wasn’t in doubt, it was low in quality with Hamlets and APSA struggling in the final third.

The first real effort on goal for either side came on the half hour mark as APSA’s Ian Steele played a raking 60 yard pass for Bismark Donkor,

He then crossed for debutant Jordan Malick, but his shot fell just wide of the target.

Hamlets goalkeeper Robert Hutton was forced into action as Steele and Donkor combined again, this time for Kulbir Singh.

The second half was dominated by Hamlets, and only Fahad Nyanja’s goalline clearance denied the hosts from taking the lead earlier.

Up the other end, Donkor could only fire straight at Hutton, and the missed chances proved to come back and hurt APSA.

A deep free-kick evaded the visiting defence and With was on hand to coolly head past John Opaluwa to seal all three points for AJ Olatunbosun’s side.

But considering all the changes and several debutants APSA boss Zakir Hussain was pleased with his side’s effort.

He said: “Against a top side like Tower Hamlets we fought hard with hunger and passion, and the players who stepped in today made a good account of themselves. Huge credit especially to Bils who was fantastic and it’s really a great moment for him personally to overcome such a horrific injury.”
