London Lions had a surprise visitor at training this week as West Ham United goalkeeper Darren Randolph dropped by the Copper Box Arena.

The BBL Championship high-flyers play their home games at the Copper Box just a short distance away from West Ham’s new home at the London Stadium in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

Republic of Ireland international Randolph is a keen baller and his father Ed was a professional basketball player, so It was no surprise the 29-year-old enjoyed his time with the likes of American Alex Owumi.

“I am a huge basketball fan and it was great fun to get out there, take some shots and learn some skills from the professionals,” said Randolph.

“My Dad is 57 and still plays now. He taught me the basics when I was a kid and I like to think I’ve got a bit of game!

“Although football is my number one priority, I always enjoy the chance to have a game of basketball when I can.

“Obviously I’m not as good as these guys, but it was nice to get out there and test my own skills against them.

“They made me feel really welcome and I got quite far in one of the shooting games so I really enjoyed it.”

The collaboration came with both clubs facing important games against Manchester opposition in the coming week.

While West Ham visit Manchester United in the Premier League and EFL Cup in the space of four days, the Lions host Manchester Giants at the Copper Box this Friday.

And though Randolph may be too busy to be in the crowd to see the Lions host the Giants, he hopes to see a few of their games this season.

“It is fantastic for the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park to have two top sports teams based here in West Ham United and London Lions and I’ll certainly be looking to come down and watch some games at the Copper Box Arena in the future.”
