The Hammers laid on a big surprise for some young fans with Pedro Obiang and Ashley Fletcher there to meet them
West Ham have certainly had some teething problems in their move from Upton Park to the London Stadium, but there are things they have c got spectacularly right this season.
Crowds of over 50,000 have seen most games and the fact that there are more youngsters in the West Ham crowd than any time in the past is testament to the work the club have done in reducing prices and getting the kids through the turnstiles.
A season-ticket for a youngster costs just £99 and to celebrate that fact, a group of families were invited down to the London Stadium this week to have a look round.
And much to their surprise they were greeted by two of the West Ham stars, who met them and signed shirts and various memorabilia for the kids and their families.
Striker Ashley Fletcher and midfield man Pedro Obiang were at the ground on Tuesday afternoon to meet families from Wickford, Colchester and Barking’s Sunil Karir and his family, all first-time season-ticket holders.
Fletcher said: “I am here on behalf of the club to promote how well the club has done in reducing the ticket prices so youngsters and families can afford to come and watch football matches. I am here to surprise a few families and hopefully they will recognise me and Pedro!”
There was no doubt about that when the players finally met up with the excited youngsters.
“When I came to West Ham I knew the relationship between the fans and the players was so strong and that is what we have to keep up moving from Upton Park to this magnificent stadium,” said Fletcher.
“Getting the relationship with the fans right is important and things like this will help with that.”
They certainly will and whatever the problems that have hit the club at their new stadium, they can be certain that they have got this one right.
West Ham said: “Ashley was alongside Pedro Obiang to surprise three families who have bought season tickets for the first time due to the club’s commitment to affordable family football which saw youngsters having to pay just £99 for their seat.
“West Ham United have worked to ensure that families ands the next generation of Hammers fans are able to see top flight football for the best price possible and thousands are benefitting from the club’s amazing offer.”
Let’s hope the youngsters see plenty of goals and plenty of wins for the Hammers over the rest of the campaign.
