Aldersbrook kept their nerve to win a penalty shoot-out and claim the silverware in the KS2 year five-six boys’ football competition staged by the Langdon Academy Sport Partnership last week.

A total of 20 Newham schools took part in four pools of five, with Aldersbrook topping group one after beating Central Park (2-0), St Luke’s (1-0), St Antony’s (1-0) and drawing 1-1 with Roman Road.

A single goal proved enough to see off Sandringham, who had finished second in grouo two, in the quarter-finals and Aldersbrook beat St James, runners-up in group three, 2-0 in their semi-final.

That set up a showdown in the final with Brampton, who had drawn with Grangewood (0-0) and beaten St Michael’s (1-0) and Lathom (1-0) in group four, finishing second behind St Helen’s, to whom they had lost 1-0.

Brampton defeated Elmhurst 1-0 in the quarter-finals and Central Park by a solitary goal in the last four and the final ended all square at 1-1, before Aldersbrook won the shoot-out.

The third-place play-off also went to penalties, after Central Park and St James battled to a 1-1 draw, with Park coming out on top.
