Cleveland year five/six boys’ football team held their nerve to win the Langdon Academy School Sport Partnership football event on penalties.

The competition attracted 14 schools from across the borough, with sides split into three groups: two featuring five teams and the other containing four.

Nelson, Lathom, St Joachim’s, St Helen’s, Cleveland, Langdon, St Edward’s and St Anthony’s all progressed from the group stage to the quarter-finals.

Cleveland beat Langdon 2-0, while St Joachim’s and St Anthony’s recorded 1-0 wins over St Helen’s and St Edward’s respectively and Lathom beat Nelson in a shoot-out.

Both semi-finals ended 1-0, with Cleveland overcoming Lathom and St Joachim’s defeating St Anthony’s.

After the final ended 0-0, Cleveland showed great character to win the shootout against St Joachim’s, while St Anthony’s triumphed 2-1 in the third-place play-off.

As always, the event was ably supported by the LASP’s team of young volunteers who ensured things ran smoothly.
