Newham boss preview Cricklefield encounter and discusses weekend's defeat
Newham manager Zakir Hussain wants his team to bounce back following their heavy loss in the Essex Senior League last weekend by beating Ilford tomorrow evening.
Basildon United scored three times after the break to consign Hussain to a 4-0 defeat at Gardiners Close on Saturday.
It was Newham’s first match in three weeks, but that was no excuse for their manager and he expects a response when they travel to Cricklefield tomorrow for a ‘home match’ against Allan Fenn’s Ilford.
“They are a decent side and they have done well this year, although they probably would have liked to have done a little bit better,” said Hussain.
“We beat them (3-1) quite comfortably earlier in the season, but they will be a much better side this time around.
“It should be a good game, but a game we should be able to compete in but if we don’t turn up we will lose.
“If we can beat Ilford it is like a six-pointer at the top half of the table.”
Newham will want to get back to winning ways as they haven’t tasted victory since January 17 when they beat Takeley 5-2.
But they have only played once in the league since that success, Saturday’s 4-0 thrashing against Basildon.
On that defeat, Hussain said: “Everything was there for us to lose, but regardless of how many weeks we hadn’t played, it isn’t an excuse.
“It wasn’t like we were playing top of the league. Basildon are a mid table team and a good side, but one we should compete against.
“My players wanted to play football on the ground and you have to learn to play different environments. They adapted to the situation and we didn’t.
“The players need to put the effort in now and get some more victories before the end of the season.”
