Essex Senior League: Clapton 2 Tower Hamlets 0
Clapton got the better of east London rivals Tower Hamlets as the new Essex Senior League season got underway.
Two first-half goals proved enough for Tons to bank the points as they looked to build on their success in the Gordon Brasted Memorial Trophy last term.
Barely four minutes had been played when Fahad Nyanja opened the scoring to the delight of the Old Spotted Dog faithful.
But Tower Hamlets went close to getting back on level terms as Omar Rowe saw a free-kick saved by Pape Diagne and newcomer Ade Orenaike fired wide from a corner.
Michael Walther’s Tons doubled their advantage around the half-hour mark when Nathan Cook fired inside the far post and that was the end of the scoring as the home side protected their lead.
Clapton’s Kristian Haighton tweeted: “Great performance! First game of the season, first win! Fans were amazing as always #BestFansInTheLeague.”
Both sides will now turn their attentions to the FA next weekend, when they face extra preliminary round ties.
Clapton are in action at the Old Spotted Dog once again, albeit as the away team against London Bari, while Ade Abayomi’s Tower Hamlets travel to Enfield.
Tons return to league action with a home match against Stansted on Tuesday August 9, with Tower Hamlets visiting league new boys Barkingside, who were relegated from Ryman North last season, the following evening (August 10).
