John Dignum, an ABA titleholder and a product of Newham BC, has turned his back on the amateur side of the sport to launch a new career in the pro ranks with his debut booked for York Hall, Bethnal Green, on January 13.

After his shock success on the ABA title trail earlier this year, the 19-year-old Dignum, who first hit the title trail with twin brother Danny at the Newham club, was disappointed to be overlooked for a place in next year’s London Olympics.

He admits he was disappointed and confused by the amateur officials who ignored him after his ABA triumph.

“They funded other boxers, it would have meant everything to me to box at the Olympics, but now I’m looking forward to a pro career,” he said.

Trained by Canning Town’s former WBU titleholder Jason Rowland, Dignum has joined the promotions group headed by Frank Warren as he launches his bid for pro honours.

Also under the Warren banner is Frank Buglioni, the former Repton star who Dignum defeated on his way to ABA title success earlier this year.

Buglioni has impressed with two quick wins as a pro and another meeting with Dignum could prove a real attraction if both move up the middleweight ranks.
