They have returned home in triumph. But the USA Olympic organisers have paid tribute to the University of East London’s SportsDock.

The men and women’s basketball teams, who overcame Spain and France in their respective gold medal matches, used the £21 million Docklands facility as a training base.

Rick Adams, from the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) said: “It was clear to us from the beginning that the leadership at UEL really had a commitment to doing everything they could for this to be successful.

“SportsDock is an unbelievably good facility for high performance and the overall set up here has been really important in terms of our success at the Olympics.”

The UEL responded by congratulating both teams on their successes.
