Newham College clinched the London Further Education indoor cricket league with a 51-run win over local rivals NewVic.

The teams occupied the top two spots in the table heading into the match and after winning the toss, NewVic put Newham into bat.

Mujakkir Hussain and Zeeshan Khan steadied the innings against a NewVic attack that were making runs hard to come by, with Newham having scored just 26 runs from their first four overs.

Captain Fasil Fajarul’s arrival at the crease sparked Newham’s innings into life as he took the game to the NewVic bowlers.

Improvised shots and excellent running were key to an important 45-run partnership between Fajarul and Khan.

Muhammad Rahim and Adnan Rahim fired balls to all corners as they helped Newham post a score of 110 runs.

In the NewVic innings, Muhammad Rahim and Khan both proved they were as brilliant with the ball as they were with the bat as they ripped through the NewVic top order.

NewVic knew they had to start matching the run rate and began taking risks in their quest for victory.

This played into the Newham bowlers’ hands as they took the remaining wickets required for victory.

Hamza Omar returned to haunt his former side taking the final wicket and seal a 51 run win.

“The boys have been great all season and I really think we deserved this. We started the day slow but after our coach had a go at us, we got ourselves together and showed what we can really do,” said Fajarul.

Star batsman Khan was also quick to praise the side’s effort in their most important match.

“That was tough. We had to change the way we usually play and as our coach always tells us, we had to play ‘smart cricket’,” added Khan.
