Butt impresses with bat and ball

Newham Cricket Club produced their Sunday best to win two fixtures at the weekend.

The first team beat Ilford’s United CC by seven wickets, after dismissing their rivals for 161 in 33 overs.

And the newly-formed second team also won by seven wickets against Holborough, who were restricted to just 134 from 31 overs.

Abdul Hannan Butt (5-25) proved the pick of the bowling, as Amir Haq (3-39) gave support and Butt added an unbeaten 51 to see his side home with plenty to spare.

Saturday proved a frustrated day, though, as the first and second teams saw their Essex County League fixture postponed.

The thirds took on Bow Green seconds at West Ham Park and were sent into the field, but reduced the hosts from 58-4 to 100-8 as conditions worsened.

Green’s tail wagged, though, to lift the total to 173, with Norman Myrie hitting a six and six fours in his 32 off 21 balls.

Ian Fuller (29) gave support, as Junaid Ilyas (3-27), 16-year-old Haris Latif (3-39) and Aadil Hussain (2-22) shared bowling honours.

Asif Mahmood (13) and debutant Latif (22) steadied Newham’s reply after the loss of an early wicket, but they collapsed to 78-9 before Abad Ur Rehman and captain Nishant Mittal hit back.

Mittal hit 39 off 29 balls, only to be last man out in a 54-run defeat.
