Newham clinched the Essex County League Premier Division title with three games to spare after beating Aztecs at Flanders Field.

Captain Sajjaz Mirza chose to bat first on a hot day and saw Kashif Iqbal (51) and Robin Bansal (21) get off to a good start.

Mirza (51) batted well for his own half-century, as wickets fell at the other end, before Aamir Shaukat (40) and Mujakkir Hussain (34 not out) batted aggressively down the order to lift the total to 250-9.

Aztecs’ chase started badly as Nishant Mittal dismissed one of their openers with the first ball of the innings, with Adnan Khan also having early success.

Mittal (2-25) claimed another wicket during an excellent opening spell and Aztecs continued to find runs hard to come by as Newham piled on the pressure in the field.

Shaukat then took centre stage as he ran through the middle and lower order to claim a superb 6-17 haul from his nine overs as the visitors were dismissed for 169 in the 39th over.

Newham were then able to start their title celebrations as a 13th league win in 15 matches left them 70 points clear of Roding Valley at the top of the table.

Newham visit Ace Avengers this weekend, then host deposed champions Barking in their penultimate match before a final-day trip to Scintilla.

The seconds were handed the points from their Division One match with Scintilla and the thirds also claimed a win over their Barking rivals.

The visitors chose to bat first but tight lines from the Newham bowlers and good fielding kept them in check.

Wickets were shared between Oshada Pahalawithanage (2-9), Muhammad Kamran (2-13), Haris Latif (2-18), Mirza Sheheryar Baig (2-22) and Kamal Hossain (2-35) as Barking were bundled out for just 103 in 26 overs.

And Newham knocked off the runs in 13.5 overs to claim an eight-wicket win, with Ravi Veshala (33), Muhammad Ahsan (20) and Rohan Pawar (16 not out) all made starts with the bat.
