Essex bowling coach Dimi Mascarenhas says the defending county champions must do better with bat and ball after a difficult second day against Nottinghamshire at Chelmsford.

The visitors were eventually dismissed for 380, with Simon Harmer (4-78) the pick of the Essex attack after Ross Taylor’s 146 on day one.

And the hosts managed just 206 in 60 overs in reply, as Ravi Bopara (69) top scored.

It could have been even worse as Essex were 130-7 before Neil Wagner hit 37 off 23 balls.

Nottinghamshire decided not to enforce the follow-on and closed on 35-1 in their second innings, a lead of 209.

And Mascarenhas said: “To get bowled out for 200 on that wicket is pretty disappointing, especially after they had got 380.

“We’re going to have to bowl well and, who knows, bat really well second time around. We’re certainly going to have to front up and bowl better second time around.

“It’s a good wicket for batting if you get yourself in. Let’s give credit where credit’s due and I thought they bowled exceptionally well, put the ball in the right areas and asked a lot of questions of us. (Luke) Fletcher’s been around a long time and we know what he does, and he bowled superbly.

“We haven’t batted very well, we’ve only just snuck over 200 and that was all because nine, 10 and 11 got us there. The top order need to take responsibility and get some big runs. The highest score this season is only 84, so it’s not good enough. I know we’ve had some spicy wickets, but opposition batters have gone on and got hundreds against us, so we need to go out there and do the same.

“We’ve played on some bowler-friendly wickets and the bowlers are doing a pretty good job with the numbers the batters are putting on the board. But we’ve still got to go out there and bowl better. We didn’t bowl well in the first innings here, and second innings we’ve got to try and rectify that.”
