Newham para table tennis ace picks up a pair

Newham’s Paralympic table tennis star Jane Campbell picked up a pair of bronze medals at the Slovenia Open last week.

In the class three singles she topped her group and secured a place in the quarter-finals by beating American Pamela Fontaine 3-1.

And Campbell then saved four match points against Helena Dretar-Karic before beating the Croatian 11-6 in the fifth.

World number four Andela Muzinic, another Croatian, was too strong in the semi-finals, but Campbell said: “I didn’t feel I could have played any better and to get a bronze medal in such a competitive event is very satisfying.”

Campbell and her London 2012 partner Sara Head put up a good fight against Turkey in the team semi-final, with Campbell coming back from 1-2 down against Nergiz Altintas to beat the world number seven 11-3 in the fifth.

And despite losing the tie 3-1, it was a promising performance by the GB pair.

“I was very pleased to beat Altintas and this will definitely give me confidence for the rest of the season,” added Campbell.

“I think I’ve played as well as I could. My forehand has been working really well and that is what is making the difference.

“I lost confidence in it a bit and now I’ve got no reason not to be confident and that is a good feeling.”
