Fine wins also for Facey Thompson
Newham’s Jane Campbell was among the medals for the Great Britain Para Table Tennis team at the Lignano Master Open in Italy.
But Stratford’s Ashley Facey Thompson missed out in his event, despite a superb win over the world number three.
Campbell picked up a bronze in the class three event after some fine performances, beating Korean Sun-ja Kim and coming from 2-1 down against Turkey’s Kezban Kakir for a hard-fought 3-2 win.
A 3-1 loss to France’s Fanny Bertrand saw London 2012 Paralympic bronze medalist Campbell finish second in her group, but she beat Turkey’s Hatice Duman 3-1 in the quarter-finals.
Campbell lost the first two games of her semi-final with Italy’s Michela Brunelli, but fought back to win the next before the world number seven closed the match out by winning the fourth, 14-12.
Facey Thompson started with a tremendous 3-2 win over world number three Yuriy Shchepanskyy, of Ukraine, holding his nerve to win 11-9 in the fifth after the three-times European champion had come back to level the match at 2-2.
And another tough match against Koyo Iwabuchi of Japan saw Facey Thompson fight back from 2-0 down to win 11-5 in the fifth to earn a bye into the quarter-finals as group winner.
But the 20-year-old Londoner lost 3-1 to Frenchman Frederic Bellais, who went on to win the gold medal.
