Team medal for GB Para table tennis ace

Stratford table tennis player Ashley Facey Thompson teamed up with fellow Londoner Aaron McKibbin to take a bronze medal in the men’s class nine team event at the Slovakia Open in Bratislava.

The GB pair beat a Netherlands duo in their quarter-final, with Facey Thompson coming back from 2-1 down to beat the talented Jean-Paul Montanus 3-2 and win the tie.

But in their semi-final against Japan, with both GB players beating Koyo Iwabuchi and losing to Noboyuki Suzuki, the doubles proved crucial and a 3-1 win for Japan ultimately decided the tie 3-2.

“I felt my form in Slovakia was up and down,” admitted Facey Thompson.

“There were positives and negatives and although I think I tried my best in each match there were some I wish I could play again.

“But I just have to look forward to the next competition. I think I’m getting better at close matches and knowing what to do in the tight situations so that is giving me confidence.”

The 20 year old is now looking forward to competing in the German Open at the end of May.

“Germany will be a very strong tournament because China are going to be there,” he added.

“I’m just going to do my best, go out with no fear and just try and play the table tennis I know can.”
