GB Para Table Tennis ace adds to haul in Italy
Stratford’s Ashley Facey Thompson added another medal to his haul for the GB Para Table Tennis team at the Lignana Master Open in Italy.
Facey Thompson paired up with Kim Daybell to win bronze in the class 10 team event, after losing to the eventual gold medalists.
The duo came through their group in second place after beating a pair from Japan and a combined team from Hungary and Ireland, but suffering a narrow 3-2 loss to France.
The Brits beat Igor Misztal (Poland) and Aviv Gordon (Israel) 3-1 in their quarter-final tie, but lost by the same margin to world number six Denislav Kodjabashev (Bulgaria) and partner Filip Radovic (Montenegro).
Defeat left Daybell and Facey Thompson with bronze, while Kodjabashev and Radovic went on to claim gold.
Daybell said: “Ash had a really good competition and played well in the singles.
“He has shown great improvement and is competing with class 10 players and I think a lot of teams will be scared to come up against us now.”
Class nine player Facey Thompson, 20, had enjoyed a great win in the singles competition against the Ukrainian world number three and added: “To beat a player like Shchepanskyy in a factor 40 was definitely one of my best wins.
“I played better than in Hungary; I was more positive and I’m really happy with my performance here.”
