Two Newham Swords fencers in action for GB

Newham Swords fencers Rajan Rai and Jai Birch, ranked one and two in Great Britain, travelled to Slovenia to represent their country at the European Junior Championships.

The duo combined with Daniel Kiss to finish 13th in the team foil event after defeating Sweden in a playoff.

In the individual competition, Rai was eliminated following the first group stage but Birch progressed as the ninth seed.

In the last 64 Birch came up against Jo Lambrechts of Belgium but saw him off with a score of 15-7.

Birch’s next opponent was Uladzislau Lahunou who was ranked 24th after the opening group stage.

Despite Birch best efforts it was his Belarussian foe who advanced in the tournament but Birch recorded the best result of a British individual in the entire event.

Both Rai and Birch will be in action for GB next month when they take part in the Junior World Championships in Uzbekistan.
