Under-16 Premier Division South: Newham Youngbloods 94 Brentwood Fire 76
Newham Youngbloods under-16s claimed the Premier Division South title on a dramatic final day with a 94-76 win at home to Brentwood Fire.
Youngbloods went into the final round of matches knowing they needed not only a win, but other results to go their way to finish top.
Intent on keeping up their end of the bargain, Newham started at a blistering pace, scoring six points within the opening 30 seconds of play.
Teon Edwards, Richmond Ariyo and Alex Distras were impressing in all areas for Youngbloods early on as Arnas Petrauskas scored with a slam dunk.
Laja Ogidan and Titus Warari helped continue Newham’s impressive start as they led 30-12 by the end of the first quarter.
A deep three-pointer from Distras was the highlight of the second period for Youngbloods, while Arriyo and Edwards shone as the hosts led 54-29 at the break.
After a slow start to the third, Marka Sy added some much need pace to the Newham attack, linking up well with Dalton Bally.
With the result all but a formality going into the final quarter, both teams rotated their squad, with Youngbloods running out comfortable winners.
News then came through that other results meant Newham had finished level on points with two other sides at the top of the table.
Once Basketball England had completed their calculations, Youngbloods were confirmed as table toppers, meaning they will be the top seeds in the play-offs.
Newham know they will be at home on April 1, when they will face the winners of the clash between Thames Valley Cavaliers and Baltic Stars.
Head coach Aaron Senior said: “This was a good end to the regular season for us, we have had many ups and down.
“At the end of the season remained consistent and have been awarded with the top spot.”
