East London youngsters invited to give the sport a try

When it comes to badminton for youngsters, East London seems to be sadly lacking both in clubs and facilities.

But one man is looking to address that problem by launching a brand new junior club to teach and coach youngsters of all ages in the game.

Brian Ng, 42, already runs a senior club – the London Canary Wharf Badminton Club – but he is keen to branch out and bring the next generation of east Londoners into the game.

“Badminton is a great sport to try,” said Brian, who has been playing for more than 20 years from before he moved to England from Malaysia, one of the hot spots for the sport in the world.

“Anything that makes kids more active rather than sitting at home doing other things has got to be a good thing.

“As well as getting fitter as they play, I’d like to think that they learn sportsmanship and discipline as well, which is vitally important for me.”

Brian has two children of his own – one has just celebrated their eighth birthday and the other is about to turn 14 – and they are already learning the game.

But so far it has been the adults he has been concentrating on.

“I love the sport and so I formed a club myself back in 2009,” added Ng. “We have been going for nearly 10 years now and we have sessions at Bacon’s College most days of the week.

“Now I am a fully qualified coach and so I am looking to branch out and form a junior club.”

George Green School on the Isle of Dogs will be the venue for the juniors to learn the game, beginning on Sunday, October 14.

It will be open to anyone between the age of six and 18 of any ability.

“There are a few secondary schools that offer badminton in PE lessons, but as far as I know there are no primary schools doing it,” said Brian.

“It would be great to get plenty of youngsters giving the sport a go. We will split it into two sessions with six to 12-year-olds from 2-3pm and those from 12-18 between 3-4pm.”

The cost for the sessions, which will run up until Christmas, will be £56.

To sign up your youngster you can go via the club’s Facebook page at LCWBC Junior Badminton, or you can email the club on lcwbcjuniors@gmail.com for more details.

So why not sign your child up for them to have a go?
