Jazeps Basko of Latvia emerged as the fastest runner in the first of the City of London West Ham Park 5k Run Summer Series, organised by The Tessa Sanderson Foundation at West Ham Park.

Basko clocked 18 minutes 27 seconds to complete the run while John O’Shea of Highgate Harriers, winner of Winter Park Run Series M45 category finished in second place in 18.42 as third went to Tim Vanderpump with a time of 18.51.

In the women’s section Ilona Bagi of Serpentine Running Club and winter park run series champion came home in 21.31.

Kata Tar of Hunters Bog Trotters and Sharon Newell finished second and third with times of 22.49 and 23.14 respectively.

More than 50 runners attended the run, with the next one set for this Sunday, at 10.30am at West Ham Park.

■ Meanwhile, Tessa Sanderson Foundation athlete Jahmal Germain improved on his personal best to set a new score of 6565 points in the under-20 Decathlon on Sunday in the England Athletics Combined Event Championship held at Bedford.
