Five-time Olympian Jo Pavey took time out of busy schedule to help launch The Simplyhealth Great Newham London Family Run.
The former 10,000 metre European champion joined up with four local families, including Julia Omari-Hakim and her two children Luqman and Halima from Stratford on a group run at the London Stadium.
The mum-of-two also spoke to the families about the importance of parents taking a more active role in their child’s physical health and of her excitement about being involved in the run.
Pavey said: “I think because I’m a busy mum myself, I think it’s brilliant that there’s an event where it’s encouraging children to be active with their families.
“The run is just absolutely fantastic for families to have the chance to get out there and be active together and I think being a parent myself I like to try and be a good role model to my children – showing them it’s fun to be active.”
The oldest female European champion in history also touched on the idea of parents being role models and how she likes to keep her own family fit.
“I think parents need to be good role models, as I think that children really often do what there parents do.
“If parents are just sitting around and never being active, children find that normal and that’s what they do themselves, whereas if they get shown what’s normal is to exercise they find that normal.
“I go out running while my little boy is on the bike and my husband is on the bike with our little girl on the back or using the running buggy.”
Families will be able to enjoy their own Olympic finish line moment as they tackle a two kilometre run, before running the track that the likes of Mo Farah, Jessica Ennis-Hill and Usain Bolt did in 2012.
12-year-old Luqman added: “I’m excited and I can’t wait until the day comes.
“They said she’ll be there then as well so when I run past I’m going to give her a high-five.”
The Simplyhealth Great Newham London Family Run is organised in partnership with Newham Council and takes place at the London Stadium on July 2.
